La Muerte [14]
Death

"La muerte tilica y flaca"

The first card drawn from the Loteria deck, is La Muerte.

The digital collage layers the a painted representation of Spanish conquistadors fighting the indigenous natives upon one of their buildings. The main focus of the image shows an altar candle of "La Santisima Muerte"  A female personification of death associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the  afterlife. The saint was condemned from the Catholic church, yet maintains popularity in communities plagued by cartel violence in hope that she will deliver her believers from violent death by gun or torture. It is said she is a derivation of the gods Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, the lord and lady of Mictlan , the realm of those dead by natural causes. In 2017, 34 Unarmed hispanic people were shot and killed by armed police forces. This offering pays respect to them.
